data-start=\"1375\" data-end=\"1398\">Research in Sustainable Media<\/h2><p data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"614\">I am Associate Professor at Media Studies from SDU, and also head of an education called Screen Play Development. But I am first and foremost a researcher in the field of conditions for creative processes within the media industry.<\/p><p data-start=\"616\" data-end=\"769\">However, over the last 3-4 years I have discovered how my research into creativity within constraints suits the field of sustainability crises very well.<\/p><p data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"1048\">I have therefore been a part of several research projects on sustainable media transition &#8211; including one called: \u201cGreen Media Production Development\u201d. Together with several media companies. Told in \u2018the right\u2019 and relatable ways.<\/p><p data-start=\"2595\" data-end=\"2702\">They also demonstrate that hope and agency can be fostered through nuanced and non-manipulative narratives.<\/p><p data-start=\"2704\" data-end=\"2935\">We moreover know from research, that stories (both documentaries and fiction) can help to shape how people imagine solutions for the future. How they understand their own agency, and which kinds of solutions they consider possible.<\/p><ul><li>Products from the entertainment industry can, according to researcher Abby Prestin (2013), potentially offer insight into the human conditions \u2014 insights that evoke feelings of appreciation and engage viewers in a deeper, more conscious and perhaps critical reflection on the content. An engagement that often persists long after the stories have ended.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li><p data-start=\"3292\" data-end=\"3530\">This applies across a wide range of thematic areas, including: women in politics, minorities, smoking, climate issues etc., where narrative representations can help to shape attitudes, spark discussion, and influence public understanding.<br \/><br \/><\/p><\/li><li><div>However, such effects are of course hard to measure. Especially the ones put into sci-fi future scenarios, very hard for audience to relate to.<\/p><p data-start=\"5027\" data-end=\"5182\">Unlike crises such as pandemics or wars &#8211; climate crisis has no endpoint. And Phie Ambo\u2019s new documentary <b>Fire, Water, Earth, Air<\/b> (2026).<\/p><p data-start=\"6409\" data-end=\"6497\">They try to explore human\u2013and nature relations or climate challenges in thoughtful ways.<\/p><p data-start=\"6499\" data-end=\"6612\">Such examples also demonstrate that climate-conscious storytelling <u>IS<\/u> possible and can be artistically rich also.<\/p><p data-start=\"6614\" data-end=\"6730\">Sustainability as themes in film and series is of course <u>NOT<\/u> something that can be imposed on creators or audiences.<\/p><p data-start=\"6732\" data-end=\"6852\">The task is to develop stories that invite reflection and make sustainable futures conceivable <u>without<\/u> prescribing them.\u00a0<br \/><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">And not every screenwriter is interested in this. For instance, the Danish broadcaster TV 2.<\/p><p style=\"color: #d97524; font-size: 32px; line-height: 34px;\">\u201c<i>We are now beginning to introduce a focus on green storytelling. We are doing this from the spring [2024], when our producers start working with a tool within Green Storytelling. And it is based on three parameters.<\/i>\u201d<\/p><p data-start=\"7411\" data-end=\"7542\">(Carsten Sparwath, CEO, TV 2, 22\/3-24, in the \u201cGreen Media Production Development\u201d characters<\/u> often manage to illustrate how agency can emerge even in constrained circumstances.<\/p><p data-start=\"7808\" data-end=\"7925\">A well-known example is the Erinn Brockovich, or Fanny data-end=\"8207\">A survey on the reception of Families like ours, that two of my colleagues and I, carried out after the release of the series (2025), did show that Fanny (Paprika) Steen was the character that most of the respondents pointed out.<\/p><p data-start=\"8209\" data-end=\"8393\">And she is \u2018only\u2019 the mother of the main character Laura. But Fanny is still pointed out in the survey as the most likeble character (with 17%).<\/p><p data-start=\"8395\" data-end=\"8597\">The main point here is that themes like: L<b>ongterm consequenses, how they travel, how one would react to being a climate refugees<\/b>, are among the things the respondents point out they get from the series.<\/p><p data-start=\"8599\" data-end=\"8630\">Others are useful to consider not only the footprint behind the camera, but also the imaginative worlds we place in <u>front of it.<\/u><\/p><p data-start=\"9631\" data-end=\"9722\"><u>Screenwriters<\/u> carry a responsibility here \u2014 not only producers and production companies do.<\/p><p data-start=\"9724\" data-end=\"9914\">Many of the sustainable choices are actually made at the script stage:<br \/>How many night scenes you include.<br \/>Whether your main character shops second-hand and drink oat milk, or not, and so on.<\/p><p data-start=\"9916\" data-end=\"10051\">And elements of sustainability can appear in a story in different ways \u2014 explicitly, implicitly, or through production-related choices.<\/p><p data-start=\"10053\" data-end=\"10176\"><b>Stories do not necessarily have to
